North Carolina

A word from North Carolina’s State Tourism Director, Wit Tuttell Two weeks ago, a majority of the mountain communities of Western North Carolina were catastrophically impacted by Hurricane Helene. As those communities most hard hit continue their recovery efforts, we hold the lives lost and those who have now been impacted by Hurricane Milton close at hand. As the state’s tourism marketing organization, we work to inspire travel to North Carolina. In unprecedented disasters like Helene, we must evolve our work to ensure the safety of our residents and support the rebuilding of the homes and businesses that make these areas such wonderful places to visit. I’m writing to you today to share the best ways you can help our mountains in the aftermath of the storm, both now and in the future.

Donate to the NC Disaster Relief Fund at nc.gov/donate. " "

This fund, administered by the Governor’s office and The United Way of North Carolina, delivers much needed funding directly into the hands of local, on-the-ground organizations assisting with relief efforts.

Plan future travel to the NC mountains.

While many of the mountain areas are restricted to essential travel while they rebuild, we encourage you to book a future trip for when the communities reopen to visitors. Asheville, Boone and all of the incredible destinations within the mountains need your support now. If you had a trip planned for this fall, postpone it rather than cancel it. Your promise to travel in the future provides a lifeline to the community to keep their businesses open while they recover.

Support local NC businesses this holiday season.

You can also support the local economy by shopping directly with small businesses headquartered in the mountains. Buying your holiday gifts or gift cards allows businesses to stay afloat and pay their employees.

The rest of our state east of the mountains continues to welcome visitors this fall and beyond. We have received calls from visitors who are worried about traveling to other parts of North Carolina for fear of getting in the way of recovery. Let me assure you that most of the state from the coast to the foothills of the mountains is open and ready to receive visitors.

We will continue updating our recovery information and sharing how to help at VisitNC.com/helene. With your help, we will pull through this immense challenge, and our communities will be here with open arms to welcome you back to the Land of the Sky.

Thank you for keeping North Carolina in your hearts and for choosing our state for your travels. We can’t wait to see you soon.
