Checking into Saint Johns Resort felt like stepping into a world where every detail was thoughtfully designed to create an unforgettable stay. From the moment we arrived, the staff set the tone—warm, attentive, and unfailingly courteous. Our party of three was initially assigned a room with one king bed, but the mix-up was resolved with remarkable speed and professionalism. The bellman assisted with our luggage (the kind of gracious staff member who quietly makes everything seamless) by immediately helping reload and transfer our bags. Not only did he make sure the second room had adequate accommodations, but he also called in the hotel manager to ensure our comfort. Within minutes, we were upgraded to a spacious two-room suite—an over-and-above gesture that set the stage for a stay where we truly felt like royalty.
The new suite was nothing short of lavish. With plush living area, a full kitchen, and laundry facilities, it offered every comfort imaginable. Elegant and comfortable furnishings struck the perfect balance between refined luxury and home-like warmth. The extra space gave us the freedom to relax together while still having privacy—a thoughtful touch that made our stay all the more enjoyable.
On our walk to dinner that evening, we admired artwork displayed throughout the halls and glimpsed the outdoor gardens and water features through floor-to-ceiling windows along the walkway. It was a striking reminder of how art and nature intertwine seamlessly throughout the resort. I learned many of the art pieces lining the corridor walls were imported from Barcelona. Arriving at FIVE Steakhouse just off the main lobby, we stepped into a setting that exuded sophistication. The decore blended the new with the memories of the past. Service was impeccable—attentive without being intrusive—and the culinary artistry on display elevated the experience even further. Sous Chef Casey Knox stopped by the table, answering questions with genuine enthusiasm and sharing details of his craft. His explanation of the Confit Chicken—slowly baked for tenderness, then finished in duck fat for crispness—made the dish come alive even before the first bite. The flavors were as refined as the presentation, a perfect marriage of technique and creativity.
The following day, my colleague, sports writer David Derden, toured the resort’s pride and joy: The Cardinal golf course. Spanning 200 acres of rolling hills, classic bunkers, and century-old trees, this Raymond Hearn-designed course blends traditional charm with modern playability. it’s the first high-end public course to grace the region in over two decades. For a lighter outing, the Little Cardinal short course offered seven whimsical holes like Punchbowl and Volcano—ideal for families or simply for enjoying a carefree afternoon. He noted how immaculately maintained the grounds were, reflecting the pride and care poured into the property.
Evenings invited further exploration, from craft cocktails in the Wine Grotto (recognized with the Wine Spectator 2025 Award of Excellence) to the inviting charm of Doyle’s Irish Pub, where hearty tavern fare and a lively patio made it the perfect spot for unwinding after a full day.
What stood out most during my stay, though, was the staff. Their attentiveness went beyond good service—it was heartfelt hospitality. Whether it was a kind word in the hallway, a thoughtful check-in during dinner, or the prompt resolution of our room situation, every interaction reminded me that at Saint Johns Resort, guests aren’t just welcomed—they’re celebrated.
Committed to giving back, 100% of this resort’s profits are donated to charities both locally and globally. Saint Johns Resort isn’t just a hotel—it’s an experience. For travelers seeking a blend of luxury, leisure, and genuine care, this Humanitarian Hotel shines as one of Michigan’s premier retreats.
