Located along the Mississippi River, Bellevue is a charming town full of natural scenery and in the winter, is a top bald eagle watching spot. Take a drive around the nearby countryside and hunker down in a cozy B&B for the weekend:
1. Bellevue State Park
Grab some snowshoes or cross country skis and spend a day learning the snowy terrain of Bellevue State Park. Bald eagles don’t migrate south for the winter and are often seen near the Mississippi River. Make it a challenge to see what birds you can find.
2. Great River Road National Scenic Byway
The Great River Road National Scenic Byway offers beautiful views along the Mississippi River from the comfort of your warm car. This National Byway follows the river from mouth to delta. The nearly 300-mile-stretch through Iowa boasts stunning views including snow-covered bluffs, rolling hills, and deep valleys.
3. Grant Wood Scenic Byway
Artist Grant Wood, famous for American Gothic, grew up amid the rolling countryside near Anamosa. While driving the Grant Wood Scenic Byway, you’ll see wineries, museums, and historical sites as well as the landscapes that inspired his paintings.

Pop into River Ridge Brewing for a local craft brew. This Iowa nano-brewery was started by four local boys in an attempt to give back to the community where they grew up. The taproom doesn’t include a restaurant, but you can bring in food from any of the local dining options.
