The Nation's Capital - The Ultimate Washington DC National Cherry Blossom Festival Experience by Beyond Times Square.

At Beyond Times Square we’re looking ahead to spring! More specifically we’re looking forward to Mother Nature’s gift of beauty in our nation’s capital each spring – cherry blossoms!

It’s thanks to these beautiful blooms that we have the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC each year. The dates for the 2025 festival are March 20 through April 13. For those that may not be familiar, let’s start with a little history lesson because these trees are not just pretty – they’ve got a cool backstory.

Over a century ago, in 1912, the mayor of Tokyo City gifted Washington DC a remarkable symbol of friendship. The gift? Thirty-two hundred Japanese cherry trees, spanning twelve different varieties. Thanks to this generous act, each spring the city blooms into a spectacular sea of pink. It took some time, 23 years in fact, for the first Cherry Blossom Festival to kick off. But boy, was it worth the wait! Now, every year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival transforms the city with unique events – from petal-themed parties to parades – each one a celebration of the flowers that bring a vibrant pink energy to life.

At Beyond Times Square, we’re all about taking this special time of year and making it even more special with unique private experiences.

Visiting Washington DC during cherry blossom time is a truly magical experience, and here’s why:

  1. Stunning Natural Beauty: The cherry blossoms create an incredible sea of pink and white flowers around the Tidal Basin and National Mall. The visual spectacle is breathtaking, with iconic monuments like the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument set against the vibrant blossoms.
  2. Cultural Celebration: The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a lively celebration of Japanese culture with performances, parades, food, art, and more. It’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in this cultural exchange while enjoying the beauty of nature.
  3. Perfect Spring Weather: The timing marks the arrival of spring in D.C. The weather is typically mild and comfortable, perfect for outdoor activities like strolling around the Tidal Basin or taking a boat ride on the Potomac.
  4. Picturesque Views: The cherry blossoms make for some of the most Instagram-worthy scenes in DC. Whether you’re taking a scenic walk, having a picnic, or just relaxing, there’s a stunning view around every corner. It really feels like walking through a painting.
  5. Historical and Scenic Landmarks: Besides the cherry blossoms, DC offers tons of historic landmarks and museums to explore, many of which are within walking distance of the blooming sites, so you can combine sightseeing with nature appreciation.
  6. A Symbol of Friendship: The cherry trees were a gift from Japan in 1912, symbolizing friendship between the two nations. This makes the annual event even more meaningful and a great reminder of international goodwill.

It’s a short, yet unforgettable, window of time when the city becomes a peaceful oasis of color and culture, drawing tourists to witness the bloom! View our video of Washington DC by Land and Sea:
