And the Music Goes On

Billy Ray Johnson, straight out of Vanceburg Kentucky, is our next featured member of the Backroads Band.

Billy has been playing music for the last 40 years. Billy’s country music idols are Chet Adkins and Merle Travis, along with so many more.  He has been a member of the Backroads Band for the last 25 years.

“I truly enjoy what I do, and retiring is not in the cards for me,” said Billy.

I never remember not knowing Billy, he was always in Little Mexico picking guitars with Our Grandpa Ollie Rhoden and the rest of the family. When I asked Billie why he played bass, he told me he had no choice! When I asked him why? His reply was he was at a gig, playing with the Rex Rhoden and the Wrangler band and the bass player walked off the stage and quit. Billy walked over and picked up the bass guitar and learned how to play real fast! So he found his passion and saved the band’s behind that night!

“Playing music is a part of my life that has taken me many places. Family, Friends and Memories, that’s what makes it all worth it to me. New and Old friends that come along, always makes every gig worth it,” said Billy.
