Here’s How To NOT Ruin Your Extended Weekend Getaway

A weekend getaway sounds easy in theory. And yeah, to a degree, it actually is.

Like you just make some homemade snacks for the road (or airport). You toss a few outfits in a bag, hit the road, and come back feeling all zen and refreshed. It should be easy enough.

But of course, for anyone who’s actually tried it knows how quickly those two days can spiral into sheer chaos. You’d think it wouldn’t, but yeah, it does. For example, one bad choice and you’re stuck in traffic, hauling a suitcase the size of a small car, or staying somewhere that feels more like a work conference than a retreat. If you want your weekend to be actually relaxing, it’s the little things you must nail down.

Time Your Escape

Are you leaving at 5 p.m. on a Friday? Sure, you’d think it would be an easy escape route for a getaway, but in reality, you’ll just be sitting in traffic while your stress levels skyrocket. But it’s not just that, flying home late Sunday night and pretending you’ll be fine for Monday morning is just as bad (if not worse). Just do yourself a favor and shift things around.

Ideally, head out a little earlier if you can, or roll out Saturday morning instead. And coming back, give yourself enough space to decompress before real life kicks in. Seriously, watching Netflix on your couch with clean hair and unpacked bags feels a lot better than stumbling straight into the week like you just survived a war zone. A lot of people think they can manage, but why put yourself through that?

Don’t Bother Overpacking

You’re not starring in a fashion show, you’re going away for two nights. Actually, overpacking is the fastest way to add stress you didn’t need. So, lugging around an oversized bag, digging for the one shirt buried at the bottom, realizing half your stuff is wrinkled is a whole mess that no one likes. You’re better off just keeping it all simple.

Pick a Hotel that Actually Pampers Guests

Okay, so here’s where most people go wrong: they treat the hotel like just a place to sleep. While sure, it’s technically true, and yes, some hotels don’t offer much, but at the same time, your hotel should be doing half the work of helping you relax. If you’re booking somewhere with thin walls and flat pillows, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

Ideally, just go for a spot that makes you feel cared for the second you check in. Actually, a great idea would be to look into pools, spa treatments, and rooms that actually feel inviting, like an Atlanta hotel with luxury spa services. This is just an example, of course, but Atlanta is usually one of those major weekend getaway destinations here in the US, so if you’re staying there, wouldn’t you want it to be luxurious? Well, that, and relaxing too of course.

You Need to Stop Overplanning

Just keep in mind that this is a weekend, not a documentary. You don’t need an itinerary packed tighter than your overstuffed suitcase. Besides, cramming in every landmark, every restaurant, and every activity leaves you more exhausted than you started. The real joy is in slowing down. You owe it to yourself to sleep in, get into the pool, wander a bit, just take it all slow. Seriosuly, taking it slow is the only way to feel refreshed.
