9 Tips for Making Summer RV Living More Comfortable

Discover nine practical tips for comfortable and fun summer RV living. Make the most of weekend getaways with these expert tricks—your family will thank you.

Summer RV living should feel like freedom, not a struggle against heat, cramped spaces, and discomfort. We’ve been RV enthusiasts for years. Despite our busy, two-income household schedule, we always carve out time for weekend road trips to explore new attractions and destinations across the U.S. Along the way, we’ve picked up a few tricks to make summer RV living surprisingly cozy and enjoyable.

Whether you’re parked by the shores of a serene lake, nestled in the woods, or camping near a theme park, here are ten practical tips to enhance your weekend RV getaways and fully enjoy your summer.

1. Plan Your Routes and Stops Ahead

You might love the idea of “winging it” on a road trip, but trust me, in summer, it pays to plan. Popular RV spots fill up quickly during the busy season. Use apps like Campendium, Harvest Hosts, or RV Trip Wizard to book campgrounds in advance.

Don’t be afraid to plan shorter distances for your weekend trips, too. Some of our most memorable trips have only been an hour away from home! Spending hours behind the wheel will leave you exhausted before you can even enjoy your destination. Instead, aim for destinations no further than three to four hours from home to maximize your precious time off.

2. Tame the Summer Heat with Smart Cooling Hacks

Someone tending to AC fan inside RVWe all know how unbearable an RV can get in summer heat, especially during peak afternoons. To keep things cool, invest in reflective shades or thermal curtains for windows and skylights. They block out heat and help your air conditioning work more effectively.

Also, it might be time to upgrade your air conditioner and get rid of the one from when your grandpa drove the rig. You can also try using portable USB fans for personal cooling. These little lifesavers are budget-friendly and help circulate cool air in tight spaces where the AC may not reach.

RV Hack: If your campsite has electricity hookups, plug in a standing fan outside your RV. Having airflow outside while you relax in the shade can make a world of difference.

3. Stick to Light and Fresh Meals

Family enjoying a meal in an RVCooking up a storm in a small RV kitchen on a hot summer day? Not ideal. Instead, stick to simple meals that use fresh ingredients. Salads, cold sandwiches, fruit platters, and wraps are refreshing and quick to prepare.

A portable grill can add variety to your menu. Grilled veggies, seafood skewers, or burgers are fast, delicious, and create almost no cleanup inside your RV.

Bonus Tip: Meal prep before you leave! Pack chopped veggies, marinated meats, and any condiments needed, so you can minimize your on-site cooking time.

4. Bring Comfortable Outdoor Seating

Your RV may have inside seating, but summer RV living means spending time outdoors. Pack foldable chairs, a portable picnic table, and maybe even a hammock if you’re feeling adventurous.

Comfort outside also means shade. The other RVers might take the shady camping spots but the time you arrive, so come prepared with your own. A portable canopy or awning creates a cozy space to lounge without worrying about the blazing sun. Look for UV-resistant options for added sun protection.

5. Pack Layers for Clothing

Don’t underestimate how chilly summer nights can get, especially at mountain campgrounds or desert regions. While tank tops and shorts are staples during the day, pack lightweight layers like hoodies, pullovers, or fleece blankets for evening bonfires or early hikes. Are anyone else’s kids freezing at night? Don’t forget to bring their sweats, too!

Quick Tip: Stick to moisture-wicking fabrics, even for your daytime clothing. They’ll help you feel comfortable as you explore in warm, humid weather.

6. Upgrade Your RV Bed for Better Sleep

Cramped beds and thin RV mattresses can make summer nights feel much longer than they are. Invest in a high-quality mattress topper to add that “hotel bed” level of comfort. Memory foam is a great option as it doesn’t sag over time.

If you’re going somewhere very warm, pack cotton or bamboo sheets. They’re breathable and wick moisture to help you sleep cooler in summer weather. If you’re traveling as a family, make sure everyone in your group gets a comfy sleep setup. Happy, well-rested travelers equal a great trip!

7. Stay Organized With Storage Hacks

Weekend RV trips mean limited time and space, so staying organized keeps the fun alive and the stress to a minimum. Utilize storage bins to keep essentials in order and invest in collapsible containers for items such as food, laundry, or extra bedding.

Wall-mounted hooks, magnetic strips, and over-the-door organizers also help reduce clutter. With everything in its place, you’ll spend less time looking for items and more time exploring.

8. Create an Outdoor Entertainment Zone

One of my favorite parts of summer RV living is turning the campsite into a cozy outdoor hangout zone. Pack string lights or lanterns to create a magical ambiance in the evenings.

Bring along board games, a Bluetooth speaker for music, or a small projector to watch movies on the side of your RV. Activities like stargazing or making s’mores over a portable fire pit are perfect ways to enjoy family-friendly fun under the stars.

9. Stay Safe and Stay Hydrated

Summer fun can turn uncomfortable quickly if you’re not careful. Pack sunscreen, bug spray, and a first-aid kit to handle any minor inconveniences during your trip.

Equally important? Hydration. Always keep plenty of reusable water bottles on hand and encourage your family to drink water throughout the day. Dehydration sneaks up faster than you think in summer heat, especially if you’re hanging out by the water.

Kick Off Summer RV Living with Comfort and Fun

Your RV trips don’t have to be a trade-off between comfort and adventure. With a little planning, some smart tricks, and the right gear, you can create a memorable, hassle-free getaway that leaves you refreshed and excited for your next weekend adventure.
